The Great Ennead of Heliopolis is a group of nine Egyptian gods who, as a group, formed the spiritual foundation for the civilization of ancient Egypt. The first written record of the Great Ennead dates back to the Fifth dynasty pyramid texts found in the pyramid of King Unis (2375-2345 BC). Each of these gods had a spiritual function that exactly parallels the spiritual function of each of the nine soul types. The following table illustrates the relationship between the soul types and the Egyptian gods of the Great Ennead.
| SoulType | Egyptian God | Spiritual Purpose |
Ra | illuminates the soul
Tefnut | breathes life into the body
Shu | holds the magic moment "now"
Nuit | aligns the body with the soul and the cosmos
Geb | awakens consciousness
Nephthys | creates the home shaped by the soul's love
Seth | finds the nature of the divine identity
Isis | bonds and binds the soul to the body
Osiris | leads from the divine substance of the soul
